A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The president reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled significant apprehensions over construction quality.

In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
