The esteemed football figure has made clear that he is not pursuing a re-entry into football management, pointing out that it would be tough to recreate the special mission he felt as the national team coach.

The former coach expressed his intention to channel his attention toward engaging young people and combating what he labeled a widespread pessimistic outlook currently found in the country.

Exploring New Avenues Beyond Coaching

During a broadcast discussion, Southgate was prompted regarding speculation linking him with open coaching positions in the English football and abroad.

“I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” he answered. “It will be tough to match that experience. After nearly four decades in the game, I’m now exploring new fields where I can contribute positively.”

Commitment to Positive Examples

Prior to the launch of his upcoming book, Dear England: Lessons in Leadership, he shared that he is “very passionate” about providing role models for the youth, drawing on insights from his time as leader of the England team between 2016 and 2024, as well as his role as a father.

The leader maintains that his experience leading the national team, during which the team evolved from being deeply unpopular to broadly loved, holds wider relevance.

“Initially, the relationship with supporters was severely strained,” he explained. “People saw us as high-ego players but we were able to turn that around. I saw the power that the team had to bring people together of every community.”

Parenting and Influencing Youth

Speaking from his experience as a father, the coach remarked: “Every parent aims to provide a solid foundation, yet there comes a time when children stop heeding parental advice. I’ve faced this at home, just like others, and I believe this area is critically important.”

He continued: “A downbeat tone surrounds the nation now, and it’s essential to provide hope and advice to the younger generation. While talent abounds, accessing suitable mentors and peer networks is crucial, since these factors heavily influence lifelong outcomes.”

Togetherness Beyond Division

Southgate asserted that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the cultural focus often highlights division.

“The reasons for public dissatisfaction are clear,” he commented. “Economically lots of places are in tough situations now and that’s going to prompt desires for change. But I have seen the ability to unite the country. I saw during Covid people doing shopping for the neighbours and that’s when we as a nation are at our best, when we’ve been pushed into a corner and come out and shown resilience.”

The manager’s upcoming publication, the book Dear England, is scheduled to offer additional perspectives on leadership and public spirit inspired by his notable time in football.
