Gavin Newsom Confirms He Is Weighing a Presidential Campaign for 2028

Gavin Newsom, a well-known member of the Democratic party, has revealed that he intends to decide on whether to run for president in 2028 following the 2026 midterm elections wrap up.

"Yes, I would be lying if I denied it," Newsom stated when asked about giving serious thought to a campaign for president after the 2026 ballots. "That wouldn't be honest. And I can't do that."

Newsom's current term as California's leader ends in early 2027, and he cannot run again. But, he noted that any choice is a long way off.

"It's up to destiny," he added.

Increased Visibility as a Trump Critic

He has stepped forward as a prominent adversary of the current federal leadership, leveraging his digital presence and pushing a ballot measure that would increase Democratic House seats in response to Republican redistricting efforts. This move has made him a target from political opponents.

Federal Funding Dispute

Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, accused that the governor is indifferent about Californians in a recent interview on Fox News. Duffy revealed plans to cut federal funds from the state and warned suspending the power to provide trucking licenses.

"I intend to cut $160m from California," Duffy declared, after a recent fatal crash in the state involving an undocumented trucker that resulted in loss of life and four injuries.

His administration noted that the national authorities had reauthorized the worker's status multiple times, which allowed him to obtain a CDL under federal law.

Duffy had before announced he was blocking $40 million from the state for not enforcing linguistic standards for truck drivers.

Firm Rebuttal from the Administration

"Former D-list reality star, now cabinet member, still doesn't understand U.S. regulations," the governor's team retorted in a previous comment addressing the secretary's comments. "Meanwhile, unlike this clown, we rely on data: California truck drivers had a death rate significantly lower than the countrywide rate. Texas – the sole state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Statistics are clear. This administration is dishonest."

Voter Sentiment and Campaign Considerations

A recent study found that a majority of the party and 48% of all registered voters indicated that the governor should run for president in the next election cycle. After the current administration began, Newsom's favorability has risen to an average of a third from approximately 30%, while his unfavorability has dropped from an mean of more than 40% to current figures.

In previous months, Newsom commented while visiting several battleground states that he had "uncertainty" about his plans for 2028.

He also referenced his earlier challenges, including being found to have a learning disability at the young age of five.

"The idea that a person who had modest test scores, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was always in the back of the classroom – the idea that you would even throw that out is, by itself, remarkable," he commented. "No one can say? I await who emerges in 2028 and who answers the call. And that is the issue for the American people."
