In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The late summer uprising was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's older political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Wider Government Discussions Underway
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of major political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
