The bodies of a 34-year-old woman and her young daughter, 10 have been discovered inside freezers in an apartment in western Austria.

The victims, a Syrian woman and her child, who had been unaccounted for for several months, were found on Friday. The freezers were concealed behind a false wall in the dwelling, located in the Innsbruck area.

Two individuals, a 55-year-old Austrian and his 53-year-old brother, were arrested in the month of June. The 55-year-old, a colleague of the Syrian woman, told authorities last week that there had been an unfortunate event—but denied murder.

Addressing reporters earlier, a spokesman for the legal authorities stated the two suspects were being kept in custody on "serious suspicion of intentional killing".

Personal details of those involved have been withheld by authorities, in accordance with Austrian law.

Their going missing was initially flagged by the cousin of the mother, who is based in Germany, on the 25th of July last year.

Authorities said the male associate told them at the time she had taken an long journey with her daughter to see her family in the nation of Turkey.

Her bank card was then found to have been used in foreign locations on multiple occasions.

Yet when investigators entered the victim's residence, her mobile phone was found.

Someone also reported hearing a disturbing sound in the flat, and shouts of "mum" on the date the mother and child were believed to have vanished.

A wider police investigation was started, with authorities finding various messages originating from the woman's phone—among them a resignation letter to her employer and messages to the male colleague.

Officials stated a four-figure sum was also transferred to the individual.

A senior police official told the press on recently that a storage unit had been rented out before the victims' disappearance and a freezing appliance had been installed within.

The brothers removed the freezer from the facility on the very day the woman and her child vanished, the official revealed. And a week later, they acquired an additional appliance.

Investigators state they believe this indicates the fatalities were intentionally orchestrated.

"The cause of death remains unclear due to the state of decomposition of the remains," she commented.

The prosecutor's spokesman—from the legal authorities—noted the specific order of occurrences is not yet known, but the victims were professionally hidden and were not found during a prior examination.

While the brothers were taken into custody in June, it was only on the 12th of November that the 55-year-old admitted to an event and to concealing the remains. He rejects any murderous intent, officials confirmed.

In a related development, his younger brother admitted to a cover-up but rejected involvement in a killing.

The two suspects are presently in detention before court proceedings in detention centers in separate locations, situated at a distance.

Via a shared communication, Austria's Minister for Women and the top legal representative stated the "alleged double murder... constitutes the swift and cruel conclusion of a mother and child and reveals a heartless setup".

"Females of all ages are being murdered due to the sole reason that they are female," they added.

"Murders of women are a profoundly embedded and issue affecting all of society that we must address decisively."
