The Golden State is Fully Drought-Free for the First Time in 25 Years.
Following 25 long years, no portion of the state is enduring drought conditions. This significant achievement arrives after difficult years marked by a lack of precipitation that worsened fire dangers and challenged its enormous farming industry.
An Update Shows An Absence of Drought
A recent update from the federal monitoring program confirmed that California in its entirety is without drought or abnormal dryness. This change was driven by weeks of above-normal rainfall that topped up major reservoirs like the state's largest lakes exceeding their typical levels.
“For anyone 25 or under you’ve only known in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” noted a weather expert.
Following Powerful Weather to Soggy Celebrations
The path to this point involved severe and lethal winter storms that pummeled the state in the not-too-distant past, causing significant overflow, power outages, and tragic losses. Although that weather began to alleviate the drought, they fell short of ending it.
As late as late December, pockets like Modoc County were deemed experiencing dryness. Subsequent downpours at the onset of 2026 finally erased those last vestiges of dryness.
A Crucial Snowpack Remains a Concern
But, experts warn that drought-free conditions is not the same as complete water security. Current readings of the Sierra Nevada snowpack indicate it is only about 70% of the average for this date.
This frozen reservoir, which accounts for a significant portion of the state's water supply as it melts in the spring, is an essential component for future water availability. Water officials stress that it is not yet time to determine the outlook for the months ahead.
“The trend we’re looking at right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” commented a California water official. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to improve by 1 April so that we’re closer to average.”
While the drought map indicates no dryness, attention turns to sustaining this precious water balance throughout the months to come.
