The Mayor-Elect affirms plans to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion
The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate in his run for office.
A Historic Residence
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the mayoral home for the majority of New York City mayors since the World War II era.
However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central policy, was not quick to announce his residency plans right away after his electoral win in November.
"The choice was based on keeping my family safe and the imperative to directing my complete efforts on enacting the agenda for affordability voters supported," stated Mamdani in his announcement.
Leaving Astoria
He resided in the Astoria neighbourhood, a district renowned for its vibrant immigrant communities and culinary diversity.
"To Astoria: my gratitude for exemplifying the true spirit of New York City," he noted.
"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, the community will continue to reside inside me and the work I do," he added.
Political Debate
Throughout his campaign, Mamdani connected his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.
But his opponents, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the apartment despite the fact that he came from a well-known family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, kept his residence in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side for his three terms, which ended in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg felt it should be a venue for civic gatherings, and championed a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
As he settles into Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will experience surroundings very different than his previous Astoria home.
With its butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.
Inside, the lower floor of the classically designed mansion is decorated consistent with the home's historical period.
The estate, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
Past occupants have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, meaning the city regulates on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.
New Yorkers see such units as essential protections as the price of rent rises faster than the average income.
Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the property website Zillow, the median rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
