This Swine Life: Hog Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Leader.
It might not have been at the identical stature as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with inescapable allusions to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a second term in office.
“If we disregard eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “Let this swine have a lengthy and joyful existence without fear.”
The event, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of feasting on pork during the holidays, was founded to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The pig, donated by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the modern linguistic fad of young people yelling “six seven” – inspired by a hip-hop line – often without clear purpose. The craze became so pervasive that a prominent word reference recently named “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A New Life
This particular pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to open the festive period,” said the event host, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It captures the character of Miami: joyful, diverse, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Annually, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”
Attendees enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they toasted the pig's pardon.
