A comprehensive search and rescue effort is currently in progress in the Caribbean region for two unlocated sailing vessels carrying humanitarian supplies traveling from the Mexican coast to the island of Cuba.

Naval Search and Rescue Operations Launched

The Mexican government has sent naval assets and reconnaissance aircraft to find the two vessels, which were carrying at least nine personnel, per a military release.

The boats had been scheduled to arrive in the Cuban capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no official word of their arrival, the navy said.

Context of Aid to Cuba

Cuba has depended significantly on Mexico's over the last several weeks, as the island grapples with multiple power outages across the country.

"The skippers and their teams are experienced sailors, and both vessels are equipped with appropriate safety equipment and communication devices," a representative associated with the mission commented.

The nine individuals on board are nationals of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Officials said it has established contact with coast guard agencies from those nations along with their embassy officials.

"We are collaborating completely with the relevant authorities and are still optimistic in the crews' ability to make it to Cuba without incident," the statement continued.

Recent Relief Shipment

Previously that week, the government in Havana warmly welcomed and officially received another boat that had carried 14 tons of donated goods to the nation.

That ship, nicknamed "a modern Granma" after the boat in which the revolutionary leader came back to Cuba to start the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, delivered solar equipment, drugs, formula milk, bicycles and foodstuffs.

Larger Political Context

Charity groups and individuals have been at the forefront of efforts to ship humanitarian aid to Cuba beginning in January, coinciding with the time a energy blockade on the island nation came into effect.

The United Nations have since raised alarms about ""critical" supply shortages, with in excess of 50,000 surgeries postponed in Cuba amid electricity supply constraints.

Foreign policy pressure have intensified over the past months, with statements from several representatives underscoring the delicate state of relations.

Reacting to previous comments, a prominent Cuban official insisted that "the socialist system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Accounts suggest that early stages of negotiations had begun, although their current progress remains not publicly known.

The Mexican navy stated it was dedicated to using all of the resources at its reach to locate the vessels and secure the well-being of the people on board.

As of now, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
